Questions?
How do I oil my Matheson Cutting Board?
We pre-oil our cutting boards with Walrus Oil so they are ready to use straight away. For used cutting boards, begin by washing thoroughly with mild soap and allowing the board to air dry for several hours. If the surface shows heavy knife marks, you can lightly sand it with 320 to 800 grit sandpaper for a smoother finish—though this step is optional. Once dry, apply a generous coat of cutting board oil by hand or with a clean rag, ensuring even coverage. Let the oil absorb for 12 to 24 hours to allow deep penetration. Finally, buff off any excess to reveal a refreshed, well-conditioned cutting board ready for use.
What oils are safe for wood cutting boards?
We recommend using Walrus Cutting Board Oil for all of our wood products. Some other alternatives: Fractionated coconut oil, Linoleic-based oils like walnut, safflower, and tung oil or white mineral oil.
How to safely clean a wooden cutting board?
To safely wash your board, we recommend using cold or room temperature water with mild dish soap. Avoid soaking your board or using the dishwasher, as high heat can damage the wood.
What makes wood the best choice for a cutting board?
Wooden cutting boards are often preferred for preserving knife sharpness, thanks to their gentle surface and natural aesthetic. They're also durable and can be refinished over time. Unlike plastic or composite boards, wood won't shed micro plastics into your food making it the healthiest and most practical choice for everyday cooking.
Why are the 2 sides of the Matheson cutting board different?
One side of the Matheson Cutting Board features a 360-degree juice trough to keep liquids from spilling onto your countertop. The other side includes three milled-out bowls—perfect for mise en place, collecting scraps, or using the board as a serving tray for dips, spices, or garnishes.
