Butter Crock
FREE Shipping to Canada and the Continental USA
The Matheson Butter Crock is a nod to the age-old tradition of keeping butter fresh, soft, and perfectly spreadable—without refrigeration.
Our glazed porcelain Butter Crock features a water-seal system. Butter is packed into the lid, which is then inverted into the base filled with a small amount of water. This process creates an airtight seal, so that you can safely keep spreadable butter at room temperature for weeks.
A perfect container of form and purpose for any kitchen countertop or breakfast table. Never wait for soft butter again!
To care for and clean your Matheson Butter Crock, wash both parts with warm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive scrubbers as they may scratch the porcelain. Rinse throughly, making sure you remove all soap residue and let air dry completely before re-filling. Find more care tips here.

Questions?
How do I fill the Butter Crock?
To fill the Matheson Butter Crock, take softened butter (about two sticks) and pack it into the small cup. Make sure to leave a little room so the butter doesn’t contact the water when inverted. Fill the larger cup with about a 1/4 cup of water and then turn the lid face-down into the water. The water level will rise around the inner cup, sealing off the butter and preventing any spoilage. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh.
Is it okay to leave butter out at room temperature?
Yes! In a crock with a water seal butter in a crock can last 2–3 weeks without spoiling at room temperature (under ~75°F / 24°C), Tip: Salted butter is more shelf-stable than unsalted.
How do you clean the Butter Crock? And what to do about a bad smell or butter residue?
To clean your Butter Crock, empty and discard any old butter. Pour out the water from the base. Wash both parts with warm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive scrubbers as they may scratch the porcelain. Rinse throughly, making sure you remove all soap residue and let air dry completely before re-filling. Moisture left in the crock can mess with butter texture or cause it to have a smell.
How often should I change the water in a butter crock?
It is important to change the water every 2–3 days to keep the seal fresh, prevent odor, bacteria, or mold and help the butter last longer.
Where should I store my Butter Crock?
We recommend avoiding direct sunlight or keeping it near a stove. A cool dry countertop at room temperature (under ~75°F / 24°C) is best.
